Hi wendy, i want to ask some questions here.
1. How to register IRD?
2. Which mobile telecommunications company available in NZ?
December 30th, 2011 at 2:09 pm
Hi Huey Theng,
Firstly for IRD application, print out the application online which you can find in this site (http://www.ird.govt.nz/forms-guides/number/forms-500-599/ir595-form-individualirdapp.html) and bring it to any Postshops or AA shop together with your photocopy of your identification documents and your driving conversion letter for faster application process. Remember to do a few copies of all your documents from Malaysia and keep it handy unless you don’t mind paying NZD0.50 per piece of paper to do the photocopy there
Secondly, there are 3 main telecommunications company available in NZ. Vodafone, Telecom and 2degrees. To choose which one to go with, my advise, just follow what your NZ friends use. Calling to the same provider sometime are much cheaper or free during the weekend which you can save a huge amount of money in the end of the day.
I hope this helps.
Cheers.. Wendy

So we can’t work without IRD number? We have to wait for until we get the number?
December 30th, 2011 at 4:46 pm
Yes. You can’t work without IRD number. Normally you will need about a week to get the number. If you found a job before you get the number, you can try telling your employer that you will provide them your IRD number at later time when you got it.

1 more question!
We are required to bring the return air fare if we do not buy the return air ticket, so how much money we should bring excluding thr NZD 2250?
December 30th, 2011 at 2:11 pm
By right if you don’t have return air ticket, you need to prove you have NZD2250. It can be bank statements, your travelers cheque or cash. If you are lucky, they don’t even bother to check you
December 30th, 2011 at 4:39 pm
only NZD2250? i heard we have to bring more than that.
THANKS for your useful information!

hi..wendy…wanna ask whether driving car in nzl is a better choice or taking bus….^^…and erm…do i need to bring sleeping bag actually??
February 1st, 2012 at 9:23 am
If you going to travel more than 2 months in NZ, then it’s more reasonable to get a car for convenient sake. Even, looking for job, most employers will prefer people who has their own transport. Sleeping bag is not necessary, most hostels provide blankets and some hostel don’t allow you to use sleeping bag on their bed. I bought one, but only use once or twice during my trips.

oic…thanks a lot….erm…do you buy any insurance??travel insurance??(sry)i didnt see your reply here…thats why i posted another one…
February 2nd, 2012 at 3:19 pm
Yes. I bought the travel insurance by Chartis. But I didn’t claim anything. There are people who didn’t buy any insurance but end up paying more for their medical bills. So, it’s all depend on your on choice.

Hi, just want to clear 1 important point. Let say I had granted a visa from 6 Jan 2012 to 9 Jan 2013, then I plan to go to New Zealand only at Dec 2012, is that the expired date for 6 month is calculate start from the date of first arrival or before 9 Jan 2013 I should leave NZ?
March 17th, 2012 at 2:26 pm
Hi Lenny,
The calculation start based on the first day you arrive in NZ where the custom put a chop on your passport. If you arrive in NZ on 1st Dec 2012, that means it will expired in 31st May 2013.
Hope this helps.

hey wendy,
you have very awesome blog to guide people like me to work in new Zealand. Now i’m waiting for 2013 quota to open… but do the quota for first come first serve basic?? Bcz i have probably grab the 1150 place for Malaysian.
Do we have to buy the ticket to Nz before applying the quota?
Can i have my medical check before the quota is open?
about the visa, do we have to apply the visa before the quota is open?
Im so appreciate if you can answer my question if you know about this.
Thank you so much.

Hi Sheirlyene,
Thanks for reading my blog. Glad that it’s helping you.
To answer your questions.. Yes the quota is first come first serve basic. So do ensure you apply early. This year quota was fill up just in 3 days once it’s open. So make sure you get ready when it comes open for 2013. You don’t have to buy tickets when you apply for the visa. There’s no need medical check up for Malaysian (Unless they change the rule which I’m not sure).
If the quota is not open, you can’t apply for the visa.
Hope these helps.
